The Underground Coffeehouse

The Underground Coffeehouse is a student-run, crafted coffee café in the basement of Mather Hall.

While its history is murky, the Underground began and remains as a student-run venture that began in the basement of Mather Hall in the mid-1980s. In 1986, its hours were 8pm to 12am on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Quiet and casual, the Underground has long been a space for the arts: poetry readings, live music, performances, talks, student murals, and artisanal coffee. The Underground is also attuned to the college’s sustainability efforts; it serves free-trade Omar coffee and composts the coffee grounds. It also offers bring-your-own-mug discounts and promotes the use of in-house, washable mugs. The staff members recycle everything they can in the college’s single-stream recycling program.
