Sophomore Smoker
A type of party or gathering, a smoker was a way for students from different colleges to come together. In particular, the Sophomore Smokers seemed to invite younger students onto campus, perhaps a way to recruit students to the campus. One Tripod article writes, “The Smoker boosts the college, we must all do our bit to help it along,” suggesting just how impactful these events were.
The tradition began with Trinity's Class of 1908, but Smokers were a popular way for students to gather with others among many other New England schools.
Juniors also hosted events, called Junior Smokers, and the two classes each had a committee of students dedicated to their planning.
The events at the Smokers varied, some including basketball games, music, presentations, and of course, smoking.
The exact extinction date of Smokers is unclear, but the events- at least by this name- slowly dwindled as the risks of smoking became more obvious to students.
