Russel was invited to campus in 2005 to speak before student-athletes of color by Head Football Coach Jeff Devaney. Russel had played [[athletics|football]] during his time at Trinity, and wanted to talk to the students about their experiences. The event has been held annually ever since, with an expanding list of Black speakers.
