====== The Iron Pony Pub ====== The Iron Pony was a pub that operated in the "smaller of the two dining rooms in Mather Hall." It opened on February 24, 1977 "after years of consideration and planning." The pub was closed down in 1991 due to meager business and profits. ===== Background ===== From 1972 to 1982, the Connecticut drinking age was 18. As a result, a pub was accessible to all College students. The Pub Committee members were: Doug McGarrah, John Gillespie, Chris Jackson, Peter Pierogostin, and Professors Andy Baum, Craig Schneider and Jane Millspaugh. When Connecticut raised its drinking age from 18 to 19 in 1982, the pub suffered heavily, as freshman were its "prime users." According to Wayne Asmus, Director of Mather Campus Center and Advisor for Student Affairs, sales would drop 63%. By 1991, business was so slow at the pub that Trinity administration and Marriott Food Inc. decided to shut it down. Cave manager Ben Miller stated that the pub would need to make $100 per night to break even, and the pub was averaging $6 to $20, while Director of Food and Services David May stated that students wanted the Cave open for events on weekends, which would usually have their own food and beverages, conflicting with the pub. ---- ===== Sources ===== Trinity Tripod, 03/19/1991.
